The Star newspaper - Opinion Section - Keep Bahasa pure and leave foreign words out of it

LATELY, I have noticed an influx of borrowed English words into Bahasa Malaysia in all kinds of media.

While this trend is common in all world languages, I am deeply concerned about the over-adaptation of loaned words, which in my opinion mars the purity of Bahasa Malaysia itself.

Loaned words such as bajet, akauntabiliti, holistik and so on are being used at all levels of society today.

If left unchecked, I am concerned that in the near future, Bahasa Malaysia will be rendered bahasa rojak and will go down the same way as the German and Italian languages, which are facing the same loaned words predicament.

Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka should be proactive in filtering out the need to adapt new words and barring those which have equivalents in their natural form.

For example, we are using the term Bajet Negara instead of Belanjawan Negara, which means the same but we use loan words nonetheless.

While languages are fluid and should be adaptable as time changes, let us not overdo it.

ORIGINAL VERSION - Adaptation of loaned English words into Bahasa Malaysia

Of late, I noticed that there are influx of English loan words into Bahasa Malaysia in all kinds of media. While this trend is common in any world languages, I am deeply concerned over the over-adaptation of loaned words on its whole, which in my opinion, marred the purity of Bahasa Malaysia itself.

Loaned words such as Bajet, Akauntabiliti, Holistik and so on are being used by all levels of society. If left uncheck, I am concerned that in near future, Bahasa Malaysia will be rendered as creole and will go down the same way as German and Italian language, which are facing the same loaned words predicament or dilemma.

Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka should be proactive in filtering out the need to adapt new words and barring those which have equivalent in its natural form. For example, we are using the term Bajet Negara instead of Belanjawan Negara, which meant the same but we used loan words nonetheless.

Let it be known that while languages are fluid and should be adapted in tandem with time, let us not overdo it and keep Bahasa Malaysia as pure as possible to protect our unique Malaysian identity.

I Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz

I won't give up by Jason Mraz

When I look into your eyes
It's like watching the night sky
Or a beautiful sunrise
Well there's so much they hold
And just like them old stars
I see that you've come so far
To be right where you are
How old is your soul?
I won't give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I'm giving you all my love
I'm still looking up

And when you're needing your space
To do some navigating
I'll be here patiently waiting
To see what you find

'Cause even the stars they burn
Some even fall to the earth
We've got a lot to learn
God knows we're worth it
No, i won't give up
I don't wanna be someone who walks away so easily
I'm here to stay and make the difference that i can make
Our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use the tools and gifts
We got yeah we got a lot at stake
And in the end, you're still my friend at least we did intend
For us to work we didn't break, we didn't burn
We had to learn, how to bend without the world caving in
I had to learn what i got, and what i'm not
And who i am

I won't give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I'm giving you all my love
I'm still looking up
I'm still looking up
I won't give up (No I'm not) on us (Giving up)
God knows i'm tough (I am tough), he knows (I am loved)
We got a lot (We're alive) to learn (We are loved)
God knows we're worth it (And we're worth it)

I won't give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I'm giving you all my love
I'm still looking up

Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

"Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it."

I read this book years ago (it has turned yellow inside out mind you) and on this very night, I "rediscovered" this book and speed read through it.

In this novel, Mitch met up with his professor; Morrie Schwartz, who've been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Lou Gehrig's disease. And thus began "the final thesis" in which Mitch will spend almost every Tuesdays with his beloved professor, chatting, dissecting meaning of life and most of all, spending time together; talking about everything under the sun and sometimes, nothing at all.

Literally taking notes of the time they spent together before Morrie's final breath. All these so called "notes" will then culminate to be bounded into this book which I now placed on my lap as I typed this review.

I'm sure the review sounded flat but don't be fooled by such bad review coming from me. It feels different reading the same novel back then compared to now.. especially when personal loss mimic the novel's flow... And I hate to say this but tears began to gather at the edge of my eyes.

This book is really really good. I know I might sound biased in this context but trust me, things will definitely be different when there's paradigm shift in your life. I like the quote at the end of the book:

"My father moved through theys of we, singing each new leaf out of each tree (and every child was sure that spring danced when she heard my father sing)..."

You're The Inspiration by Chicago

You're The Inspiration by Chicago
Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsdepot.com/chicago/youre-the-inspiration.html

You know our love was meant to be
The kind of love to last forever
And I want you here with me
From tonight until the end of time

You should know
Everywhere I go
Always on my mind
In my heart
In my soul
Baby

You're the meaning in my life
You're the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You're the inspiration
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me saying
"No one needs you more than I need you"

And I know (And I know)
Yes I know that it's plain to see
So in love when we're together
Now I know (Now I know)
That I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time

You should know (Yes, you need to know )
Everywhere I go
You're always on my mind
You're in my heart
In my soul

You're the meaning in my life
You're the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You're the inspiration
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me saying
"No one needs you more than I need you"

(No one needs you more than I)
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me saying
"No one needs you more than I need you"
(No one needs you more)
You're the meaning in my life
You're the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You're the inspiration

When you love somebody
'Til the end of time
When you love somebody
Always on my mind / No one needs you more than I
When you love somebody
'Til the end of time
When you love somebody
Always on my mind / No on needs you more than I

Memoria in aeterna - 17072012

How does it feel when you wake up suddenly, in the middle of the night, reminded of the things which remain unsaid. Things left unheard. Experiences which will never be shared physically. Moment of triumph can only be accompanied by prayers in the heart. Smile which will never be seen or touch which will never be felt ever again. Caresses missed. Laughter gone.

How bad would you feel if you kept thinking of all the good times, and at the same time, being reminded of the time when you bypassed those you love for vanity's sake. For a simple reason of "I just want to be alone?" Would you feel trapped in between the contrasting emotion roller-coaster for now or eternity until you've exhaled your last breath?

My eyes water and my heart feels the sorrow when I read the following passage:

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6 KJV)

However, the memory lives on in me. Good or bad, happy or sad, step by step I'll have to walk on. Every little bits and pieces of memory to be used and reused till it's time for me to leave this world.

Welcome back... To myself :-)

I’ve stopped blogging for so long that I thought I’ve lost my touch.. not the physical touch but the writing capability and being witty about it.
I’m not particularly sure why I stopped in the first place.
One thing's for sure, various circumstances came along, thus the long lag and not to mention, lack of motivation to continue posting new entries into the blog itself.

Anyway, this will be my maiden post after such a long break. So I would like to make this blog entry a meaningful one.
What is more meaningful than posting a book which is dear to me.. the kind of book that can evoke thoughts and provoke imaginations with its tantalizing details and juicy insight into an ancient culture that is more cultured than the westerners when they’re waist deep in the Dark Medieval Ages.
Ok, now that’s a mouthful. Luckily those are my thoughts and not me pronouncing them with my mouthful of buns plus my customary 3 espresso shots sans sugar and creamer (just a start mind you).
BUT… I shall not divulge the title as of now as I need to gather my thoughts and wittiness which I’ve lost along the way.
Do keep yourself posted :-)

Ps: welcome back to myself :-P
