The Star newspaper - Opinion Section - Importance of grammatically correct english in media release

ORIGINAL VERSION

Importance of grammatically correct english in media release

I was reading through The Star Online on an article entitled "Our citizens abroad are a patriotic lot; dated Saturday February 5, 2011", when the following sentence caught my attention.

You can gain experience by working overseas (after the studies), but ultimately we hope you will be return to work in Malaysia."

I am not sure if the statement is genuinely uttered by our Prime Minister or mistake done by the journalist covering the event.

Essentially, grammatical mistake either on e-news or hardcopy should be addressed in subsequent press releases.

One thing's for sure, The Star newspaper is looked up upon by its contemporaries and rivals alike. Millions of readers read and absorb its news on daily basis.

As such, matters pertaining to press statement by our country's leaders should be vetted and proof read before its eventual release as it will not only affect the credibility of the newspaper but our nation's leaders as well.
