The Star newspaper - Opinion Section - Respect each other's religion

ORIGINAL VERSION

It was not long ago when I penned a review in my blog on a book entitled Tamas by Bhisham Sahni. In a nutshell, it is considered a modern classic book for its no-nonsense description of religious brutality inflicted on everyone prior to the partitioning of India and Pakistan.

As I read the book, I could not help but to draw parallel view and marvel at the multicultural diversity of our beloved country. From holistic point of view, Malaysia is really an epitome of a nation consisting of different race and religion whom contributed to the development of the nation one way or the other.

While this does not mean that recent incidences will lead to an all out religious struggle, we should nip all these uninhibited religious fervour at the bud. There is no doubt that the proprietors should be brought to court and dealt as severely as allowed under the court of law. But it is also worthwhile to look into the policies and circumstances to ensure that such incidents will not be repeated in near future.

However, it does remind us that although we are living in the 21st century, the stark realities of depressed religious fervour are very much alive in each and every one of us. As one stand-up comedian once said (I forgot which stand-up comedian said it though); “religious wars are fought to determine who has the best invisible friend”.

I truly believe that every religion only preaches peace, love and understanding to us.
